Note: Much like 4, 9 sounds like something bad.  As 4 sounded like death, 9 [ku] sounds like "suffering" (if I recall correctly).  So the Japanese often say [kyuu] instead of [ku], with the major exception being the month 九月 [kugatsu].

We can now count up to 99 in Japanese. To continue past 10, just start putting characters together:

We can now also say the days of the month. Note that the first 10 days use different pronunciations!

万

Note: In English we do not have a separate name for the "ten thousand" unit, and instead call it "ten" "thousand".  In Japanese, they have the unit 万 [man] for ten thousand.  Therefore what we call "hundred thousand" is 十万 [jyuuman] in Japanese, which is more like saying "ten" "ten thousand".  This makes translating higher numbers a bit more difficult.

We can no count up to 99,999,999.  Since this is plenty high enough (and the kanji for the higher denominations are far more complicated), we won't be going higher.

Note: Japan is written as the "origin of the sun" in Japanese.  This is because Japan is the furthest east of the Asian countries and the sun rose first there, making Asia believe it was the origin of the sun. Japan is also called the land of the rising sun, which is what is depicted on the country's flag.

Also, let us be careful of mixing up 木 and　本.  A good mnemonic: the addition of the extra horizontal line on the character for "tree" emphasizes the "root".
