Note: I thought it was about time to introduce radicals.  Most kanji are formed of two or more components.  Radical components are parts of large kanji that have a certain meaning.  There are 7 types of radicals (by location).
1. へん [hen] (left) as in the 日 in 時
2. つくり [tsukuri] (right) as in the 月 in 朝
3. かんむり [kanmuri] (top) as in the top part of 安
4. あし [ashi] (bottom) as in the bottom of 貝
5. たれ [tare] (upper left) as in 広
6. かまえ [kamae] (enclosure) as in 間 or 国
7. にょう [nyou] (lower left) as in 道 or 速

In this kanji 花 we see the くさかんむり [kusakanmuri]. Kusa meaning "grass" and kanmuri referring to the location of the radical. The top three strokes mean grass, and any kanji with this top radical will have some relation to grass
